Emiel GeeraertsSenior Consultant EU
Areas of expertise
- Single-cell analysis
- Transcriptomics
- Microscopy and image analysis
- Proteomics
- Histology
- Cell technology
- Gene technology
Emiel studied Agricultural Bioengineering at the KU Leuven (Belgium), with specialization in cell and gene technology. In his master’s thesis on glaucoma, he worked on mouse models and combined a broad spectrum of techniques including histology, proteomics and microscopy, as well as bioinformatics tools applied to image analysis.
At BISC Global, Emiel is mainly involved in single-cell projects, helping biotech companies to process and visualize transcriptome information. These insights enable our customers to find new targets, biomarkers and approaches for treating diseased or damaged tissues.
“What I enjoy about bioinformatics is that it enables us to see beyond the limited scope of our own imagination. If you think of the hundreds of thousands of cells in a single-cell experiment, and that in each of these cells there are thousands of mRNA transcripts derived from genes, you are dealing with a complexity that is very hard to grasp. Bioinformatics allows us to operate on this mind-boggling amount of information, and if you ask the right question, bioinformatic tools will give you answers that you couldn’t have achieved otherwise.”
When he is not working, Emiel spends time with his family or practices kendo; Japanese sword fighting.
